It’s Time to Take A Breather

It's Time to Take a Breather (1) (1)Admin Hero has been an awesome way to give back to the community and it’s been a joy. I’ve poured countless hours into the site design and content and have been very proud of the site’s evolution over the past few years.

2014 was a stellar year for the site with nearly 100,000 unique visitors, and 450,000 page views! The Admin Hero email list also started in 2014 with zero subscribers, and is now well over 3,000. Fantastic numbers for any hobby blog.

People often ask me, “How do you have time to do it all?” and my answer is generally something along the lines of “I love what I do and I find the time.” While that isn’t a false answer, it is a more polite way of saying “I cut out time with friends and family to make it happen.”

Don’t get me wrong, I love writing on Admin Hero. I enjoy the comments and emails explaining how a post helped you earn a certification, or solve a business problem you’ve been trying to solve for for weeks, or even that you were inspired to change careers and you’re now a Salesforce Admin and loving your job. But the reality is that, after publishing a post for the last 74 consecutive weeks (and 174 total posts), I’m growing tired and need a break.

My creative juices are running low, and my family deserves more of my time. That is why I’m announcing some changes to Admin Hero.

Admin Hero started as a way for me to document what I was learning as a Salesforce Administrator but I was doing so in a public forum, hoping it would help someone else. I continued to tell myself that if I just help one person, then the blog post was worth it. Somewhere along the line, I got wrapped up in the excitement of the numbers – obsessing over page views and new email subscriptions to an unhealthy level. Somewhere along the way, I lost sight of why I was blogging.

That’s why I’ve made the decision to free up my time and refocus myself. Family is super important to me. My son is almost three now and I don’t want to miss any part of his life. I need to remind myself that Admin Hero is a hobby – not my job. This blog post sums up my feelings nicely.

In order to free up time for myself and others in my life, the blog needs to be reprioritized. I’ve decided to simplify where I can and decrease posting frequency. When I have something interesting and of value to share, I’ll write up a post. I’ll continue to share new posts on Mondays to maintain some normalcy, but I won’t necessarily be publishing every week.

The Admin Hero email list is a significant cost each month and in order to reduce the overhead, I’ll begin asking subscribers to transition to a free tool. While you won’t be receiving custom HTML emails any longer, you’ll be notified of new posts via email when they are published. You’ll also begin to see small changes to the site over the next few months as I remove premium apps from the site.

I want to be very clear – Admin Hero is not going away (and neither am I). It will continue to be a resource for those in the Salesforce community, and I will continue to blog. But my time is needed elsewhere and since time is finite, I need to determine what is most important in my life and allocate time accordingly.

Thank you for all of your encouragement and excitement for Admin Hero over the last few years. I’m excited to continue contributing to Admin Hero and the overall Success Community. You can follow me on Twitter and find me at Dreamforce.

Sincerely,

Brent Downey Full Signature

Thank you Brent! Your blog has been super helpful and you definitely should take more time for your family. I think it will still be plenty beneficial without all the extra bells & whistles you’ve added. Also even just a post when you learn something new to share is much appreciated.

Indeed… good for you! Do what you love, but don’t hit the point of not loving to do it anymore. It must have been hard to come to that decision… what a courageous email/blog – I have much respect for you!

Once a week would be plenty. I really appreciate you willingness to help. I think your decision is a great idea. With this level of temperance hopefully I’ll have AdminHero to look at for many years to come.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that your site is fantastic.

Your family is much more important. You’ve taken this religiously, but only religion is meant to be such. Keep this as a hobby that you like, but don’t burn out. Thank you for all that you’ve done, but PLEASE take this break. Salesforce is great, but all of us need to take time and slow down. I’ve known I need to spend more time elsewhere, but this helps me realize that if even an MVP needs to slow down, so do I. Thank you for all you do, I have a feeling that your next posts will be richer and even more applicable.

Your site has been very helpful, I am a newbie to Salesforce and have used it to start my career transition into this industry. So rest at night that you have not only helped me, but many others on their journey.

Brent, I share the sentiments of those who commented before me regarding all you’ve done for the Salesforce community and certainly appreciate that you want to spend more time with your family. Family is the main reason we do what we do, nothing has a higher priority. I only wish that there was a way that I could help you in this valuable endeavor, so you don’t feel like you’re in this alone. It would be an honor. Let me know.

Thanks Brent! You’ve helped us enough. I know it’s not an easy decision for you & when things get too overwhelming, we sometimes need to step back and assess the reason why we’re doing it in the first place. You made the right decision. Spend time with your family– those are far more important. All the best! 🙂
